In Hawaiian, Makakilo means “observing eye”. It is a reference to a time in ancient days when the area was used for training priests who would look to the skies for messages from the gods. Today, Makakilo is a thriving community with a wonderfully relaxed feel and unbelievable views, making it one of Oahu’s most family-friendly and exceptional communities.
Makakilo at a glance
Located on the west side of Oahu approximately 30 minutes from Honolulu, Makakilo is a growing community directly above Kapolei. Since it is right next door to Oahu’s “Second City” of Kapolei, there are many amenities to enjoy including top-of-the-line restaurants, major retailers, and plenty of attractions. The neighborhood reaches 1,000 feet in elevation, making it one of the coolest areas on the Leeward Side of Oahu and one of the best places to catch a Hawaiian sunset. As of 2020, the community has a population of just under 20,000 and is a popular choice for families, particularly those in the military.
