December is the most wonderful time of the year here on Oahu! The magic of the holiday season can be seen all over the island, and there are so many spirited events happening in and around Oahu. Here are some of our favorites!
Honolulu City Lights Family Evening
Get in the holiday spirit at the Honolulu City Lights Family Evening! Happening on Saturday, December 3, from 4 to 6 pm, this is the best place in town to experience holiday cheer. The Honolulu City Lights parade begins at the grounds of the Hawaiian Mission Houses which will be open during the festivities for tours. Enjoy family-friendly activities including candle-making and 19th-century games. Food will be available for purchase. This annual event began in 1985 with a decorated 50-foot Norfolk Pine on the main lawn and has grown into one of the most popular holiday happenings in Honolulu.
6th Annual Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace
If you haven’t checked everyone off your holiday shopping list, then be sure to visit the 6th Annual Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace. This wonderful gift fair takes place at the Neal Blaisdell Expo Hall on Saturday, December 10, from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday, December 11, from 10 am to 5 pm. This is your one-stop shop for products made here in Hawaii as well as holiday gifts and crafts. You can also score local gourmet food products and year-end inventory specials from a variety of manufacturers. More than 300 vendors will be there! General admission tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for seniors/students/military. Children 12 and under get in free with a paid adult.
The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert
We don’t want to argue, but if you’re like us then you think that the Muppet Christmas Carol is the definitive version of the Dickens classic. If you agree, then you absolutely cannot miss The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert. Presented by the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, this event features a screening of the beloved film with the musical score performed live. We definitely think Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge is his best performance (Kermit is also the perfect Bob Cratchit). The show happens at the Hawaii Theater from Friday, December 16, through Sunday, December 18.
The Nutcracker at West Hawaii Dance Theatre
Is it even the holidays if you don’t see a production of The Nutcracker? We don’t think so, which is why we’ve included The Nutcracker at West Hawaii Dance Theatre on our list of December can’t-miss events. This is another wonderful event that is perfect for the whole family. The production features 45 local dancers as well as professional guest artists from New York City Ballet, Cleveland Ballet, and others. There are two performances on Friday, December 23, at 2 pm and 6 pm at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. All proceeds will benefit the West Hawaii Dance Theatre.
